Regular readers may recall Apple’s patent application 20100084291 involving QR Code and 2d barcode ticketing. Now Apple has announced a material version of the patent with a new native app for iOS 6 to be released later this year, called Passbook. It promises to keep your boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, loyalty cards etc., all in one place (images below). Passbook will let you scan your iPhone or iPod touch to check in for a flight, get into a movie or redeem a coupon. You will also be able to see when your coupons expire, where your concert seats are and the balance left on your coffee shop card. Passbook passes will also appear on the lock screen at the appropriate time and place, for example, when you reach the airport or walk into the store to redeem your gift card or coupon. Apple claim that if the gate changes after you have checked in for your flight Passbook will alert you to make sure you are not relaxing in the wrong terminal.
