Airport Virtual Grocery Store

Tesco’s, the largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom, is trialing virtual fridges and cupboards in Gatwick airport departure area enabling travellers to buy their groceries using a smartphone app and have their order delivered the day they return (video below). There are two significant changes from last years trial of the QR Code Tesco Store in Hangangjin subway station in Seoul, South Korea. The first is that EAN-13 and EAN-8 barcodes are used instead of QR Codes and these must be scanned with the Tesco app available for iPhones and Android devices only. Secondly, instead of the static posters that were used in Seoul the groceries are displayed on 70-inch interactive screens that can be swiped to reveal several pages of products. It will be interesting to see where these trials take Tesco next.
