Russia’s First QR Code Postage Stamp

Russia’s postal operator ‘Russian Post’ has issued a QR Code stamp for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (the host city). The stamp has a face value of 25 rubles and the branded QR Code resolves to a mobile version of the official Sochi 2014 website. QR Codes on postage stamps are not new (cf. QR Code Valentine’s Day postage stamps from Taiwan and a QR Code postage stamp from Spain) but it is hard to beat the stamp from Hrvatske pošte, the national postal service of Croatia, with its unique functionality.

  1. Interesting that yet another country is doing this. The one question that vexes me is, as soon as the QR code stamp is franked, surely that ruins the scannability of the code? Therefore rendering the QR code stamp as fairly useless when you’ve received it in the mail? Anyone got any thoughts on this?
