QR Code Generators Online

There are quite a few QR Code generators online. Some of them like Barcode Maker simply cosmeticize the Google Chart API while others like ZXing have full MECARD encoding. Here are the best examples:

Kerem Erkan has produced an excellent QR Code, Micro QR Code, Datamatrix and Aztec Code
generator with many interesting features including URL shortening.

Esponce
Configure size, version, error correction etc., and save as PNG, TIFF, JPEG, GIF, XAML, SVG, EPS or all in a ZIP file.

Online Barcode Generator

  1. If I may make so bold, I have a QR generator at http://shkspr.mobi/qr.php

As far as I’m aware, it’s the only generator specifically designed to work on the phone. You can create your code from within your phone’s browser.

  6. Optiscan lets you scan - in realtime - and create QR codes on the iPhone. You can generate codes from the addressbook as well as by entering text. Optiscan is internationalised for Japanese, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and English.

Optiscan is available on the AppStore now - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=304099767&mt=8

    Reviews:

BeQRious - “hassle free scanning for iPhone users” - http://www.beqrious.com/show/optiscan-hassle-free-qr-code-scanning-for-iphone-users

AppStore - UK - I have tested this on QR codes ranging from a few characters to thousands. I have scanned out of focus and crooked, and it always seems to be able to read the code. It’s fast, and it’s accurate.

  8. What format is recommended to format contact information, MeCARD or VCard?

    Posted by Manuel | June 25, 2009, 9:25 pm
  9. @manuel MeCard is probably better for QR Code encoding because you can encode the same data with marginally less characters, normally leading to a smaller size QR Code.

  10. @Roger I agree with you. But I have tried with some Nokia mobiles (N92, 8500) and they do not read the MeCARD format with the default reader installed on them. :-)

  16. Good post and great site, Here is a post I developed as part of a series titled The Internet of Things. It is surprising that QR codes have taken this long to reach America and be adopted by the advertising crowd. Apparently, they don’t know a good thing when they see it.
Thanks for the consolidated listing, I mentioned and link to it in the post.

  27. @John Bidder | January 28, 2011, 11:44 pm…

John, the look of your site is quite nice, but the forced use of Google as a URL-shortener is a deal-breaker for many people. Two primary reasons in my view:

    1) There are a substantial number of people and organizations that just want to bring traffic to the front door rather than a deep link. Shortening by just a few characters brings no real benefit.

    2) Most QR readers now leverage the vastly improved imaging in the current crop of handheld devices. We aren’t really so locked into the old 1×1 matrix model and can safely use a 2×2 QR matrix now with more data and deep-linking long URLs.

    Please make URL-shortening optional.

And if you’re feeling clever won’t you consider adding image embedding?

  39. I might be wrong, but the most versatile barcode generator I have come across is Terry Burton’s ‘postscriptbarcode’, ‘Barcode Writer in Pure PostScript’.

The web-based online barcode generator is located at http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/ and the projects main page is http://code.google.com/p/postscriptbarcode/

It’s really not hard to write a few lines of postscript to generate the very barcode you need, and then run it through ‘gs’ (Ghostscript) to generate pdf or different image formats.

The list of supported codes are impressive, to say the least, and µQR is indeed one of the choices.

    From project mainpage, supported formats:

EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, ISBN, ISMN, ISSN, EAN-5 & EAN-2 (EAN/UPC add-ons), GS1 DataBar Omnidirectional, GS1 DataBar Stacked, GS1 DataBar Stacked Omnidirectional, GS1 DataBar Truncated, GS1 DataBar Limited, GS1 DataBar Expanded, GS1 DataBar Expanded Stacked, Code 128, GS1-128 (EAN-128), SSCC-18 (EAN-18, NVE), EAN-14 (DUN-14), GS1 Composite (EAN/UPC, GS1 DataBar and GS1-128), Code 39, Code 39 Extended, Code 93, Code 93 Extended, Code 32 (Italian Pharmacode), Pharmazentralnummer (PZN), Interleaved 2 of 5, ITF-14 (UPC SCS), Code 2 of 5 (Industrial, IATA, Matrix, Datalogic & COOP), Code 11 (USD-8), Codablock F, Code 16K, Code 49, Code One, BC412, Codabar (NW-7), Pharmacode (including two-track), MSI modified Plessey, Plessey UK, Telepen (including numeric), Channel Code, PosiCode, PDF417, MicroPDF417, Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix, QR Code (including Micro QR Code), MaxiCode, Aztec Code, USPS Intelligent Mail, USPS POSTNET, USPS PLANET, Royal Mail (RM4SCC), KIX (Dutch Postal), JapanPost, AusPost, Deutsche Post Identcode, Deutsche Post Leitcode, USPS FIM symbols, DAFT, Raw, Flattermarken, HIBC barcodes (Code 39, Code 128, Data Matrix, PDF417, MicroPDF417, QR Code, Codablock F)

If you need some other obscure format you can let him know, and it might be implemented quite soon.

  40. I am still searching for a µQR reader, as apperantly many others are too.

The zxing library is used by at least a bunch of the Android barcode readers, and it seems to be a stable and mature piece of software.

Alas the development team shows little interest in adding support for µQR, as seen in their issue tracker, issue 185: http://code.google.com/p/zxing/issues/detail?id=185

Several users are requesting this feature, with good arguments, I think, but still nothing seems to be happening.

  43. How can we be assured that QR codes will still work in 10 years? What if an artist wanted to install an engraved black/white tile QR code plaque for their public sculpture, for example with a link to artist’s web site, studio location Google map or an audio statement?

How can that longevity be assured?

Is it a matter of relying on the longevity of the hosting service for the audio file (archive.org or cinchcast.com), for instance or google maps, artist’s own web site?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

    Posted by George | September 23, 2011, 6:00 pm
  44. George, QR codes are here to stay. Certainly, if you pick google map, that wont change unless google trashes their whole MAPS system… how likely is that?
I agree on a hosting for an individuals website… but that holds true today whether its a google search or others… they clean out file not found… but it still happens.
Its up to the creator, to ensure longevity….

Has textured surfaces, a 3d-like drop-shadow, and rounded corners. Very slick.
For larger codes, includes a logo section you can change if you have an svg editor.
Works entirely in your browser, so your codes aren’t sent to the server.

This generator is easy to use and you can customize colours and add a relatively large-size logo onto the qr-code compared to other generators. Easily links to URLs, text messages, videos, contact info, or a vcard too. There’s also an internal scanner that automatically makes sure that your code is usable.

Really great for branding and doing something different from the status quo.
