<dfn>BookCrossing</dfn> is leaving a book in a public place so it can be picked up and read by someone else, they in turn do the same. Every book has a unique BookCrossing ID number and the complete history of any given book’s travels is recorded by readers and may be viewed on bookcrossing.com.

Now an enterprising Finnish BookCrossing participant Miia Ranta has started applying BookCrossing ID numbers in datamatrix code to her BookCrossing books.

When this was suggested recently on the BookCrossing forums a couple of months ago, all kinds of objections were raised. Fortunately the objections can be easily overcome and enthusiasts may soon be able to scan the BookCrossing ID with their mobile and view the books history right there at the cafe table.

A Press Release of theirs announces a new product ‘Kuyou no mado’ which are commemoration windows with QR Codes. The idea is that when the doors of the tombstone are open a QR code is visible. When decoded it leads to a webpage on which there are images and comments in memory of the deceased. The QR code in the picture decodes as http://d-qr.net/dqrcgi/r.aspx?r=8r13eci7.

He now reports on work in progress on incorporating the BBC logo into QR codes.

The people over at Tibo Software produce some nice game software but I am not sure what to make of their latest output. They say “Quetim was developed by reason of laziness of its authors to write messages on 9 keys” and it may well be true.

The way it works is that you visit quetim.com and use your computer keyboard to write the SMS text, that you want to send, into the textbox provided. Your text will then be encoded into a QR Code.

Simply capture the image of the QR Code with your mobile phone camera and if you have the free Quetim application installed it will decode the QR Code and automatically insert the extracted text into the SMS message body ready to send.

You can download Quetim for your Java J2ME mobile device with your mobile phone browser from http://www.quetim.com/mobile/ or download the JAR file to your computer from here.

Tibo Software claim that Quetim is faster than Multi-tap, T9 Text Input or iTap and of course it works with any computer or browser.

2nDimension is rolling out its Instant Voucher System (IVS) with up to 4500 news retailers in the north west of England.

Nowadays every newspaper seems to have a voucher of some kind and newsagents spend a lot of time collecting them, itemizing them and sending them off for payment.

IVS uses a mobile phone’s camera and some patented software to scan vouchers that will now have a barcode.

When a customer brings a voucher into the shop, the ‘phone will read the barcode, check its validity against 2D’s live database and inform the retailer of its obligation to the customer. The retailer will then be paid promptly and directly into his bank account and the voucher redemption is registered.

The scanning takes less than 3 seconds and only requires a mobile telephone signal to work. It is extremely simple to use and all scans are traceable by both the retailer and 2nDimension.

David Atkins of 2nDimension says the 2d barcodes that are used are proprietary but “..we are able to read standard 2D barcodes with a software tweak”.
