ComScore published its ‘2012 Mobile Future in Focus’ report today with key insights from 2011 and what they mean for the coming year. It’s a mobile marketers ‘must read’ and the full report is available for download from their website here. This is a snippet specifically on QR Codes from the report:

During 2011, QR Codes came onto the scene as a way to bridge mobile and traditional media across various mediums including print publications, product packaging, outdoor kiosks and more. A QR (”Quick Response”) code is a specific matrix bar code (or two-dimensional code) that is readable by smartphones. In December 2011, 1 in every 5 smartphone owners in the U.S. scanned a QR Code with their phone, leading Canada and European markets as the top scanning market. Canada and Germany both saw near 16 percent of smartphone owners scanning QR Codes during the month, while the UK and Spain (home to the most penetrated smartphone markets) saw just 12 percent of their audiences scanning QR Codes.

Of those U.S. smartphone owners that scanned a QR Code in December 2011, the most popular source of scanning was product packaging (done by 42 percent of the scanning population), while the most popular location for scanning was at home (done by 57 percent of scanners). Product information was the most popular result of scanning a QR Code with nearly 3 in 4 of the scanning audience directed to product info. Nearly one-third of those that scanned a QR Code resulted in a coupon or offer, while 1 in 4 received event information. QR Codes demonstrate just one of the ways in which mobile marketing can be integrated into existing campaigns to help reach desired consumer segments and further bridge the gap between mobile and traditional marketing strategies at relatively low risk and investment for brands. But in order for it to become a truly effective marketing tool, marketers must understand how consumers are engaging with these codes and how these codes can complement marketing strategies to create another connection point with consumers.

Black fish have been stuck on the hoarding, each bearing their own QR code and passers by are encouraged to ‘fish’ for free Temaki by scanning the QR Codes with their smartphone. Every code reveals a different message, which can be read upon scanning, ranging from Temaki winning messages such as “Well done, you’ve caught the freshest fish around” to “Unlucky, your fish escaped”. Winners are able to download a voucher which they can present at the restaurant during the first two weeks of opening, which is in March. ico Design who devised the game say that although the physical codes and the placement of the fish remain the same, they change the messages that are generated by each of the codes. This means that the game can be kept fresh and people can play (and win!) more than once. An unlucky fish one day might prove a winner the next.

The bus shelter is fitted with stereo speakers that play tracks selected by the public via a QR Code. This NRMA Insurance campaign is designed to show that unlike other car insurance companies NRMA cover extras such as custom sound systems. The QR Code resolves to a ‘like’ the NRMA Insurance Facebook page to download an app and pick a track to play live in the bus shelter. There is no geolocation I tried it and although I am 10,000 miles away Hip hop artist Hard Hitta is now belting out at the Sydney bus stop as I write….!

Two things occur to me about this campaign, why not use geolocation to localize the experience and are bus passengers the right target group?

Scandinavian Airlines created this “2 for 1 offer it takes 2 to see” QR Code campaign after research showed that couples tend to book their trips when they are physically next to each other. 100,000 emails were sent containing two QR Codes resolving to different videos, one left and one right of a split screen (video below). Only by combining the videos did the offer make sense and the full promotional code then revealed. Every available ticket was sold during the week long campaign and as a promotional QR Code technique I think there are definitely possibilities for developing this idea further.

Even though the QR Code simply links to an app I just had to let you know about this campaign because it’s just so original!

Young people in Stockholm, Sweden are among the worst in Europe at practicing safe sex but Stockholm County Aids Prevention Program and advertising agency Esther came up with a brilliant and fun campaign to promote the use of condoms (video below). At the start of the campaign free condoms were handed out with a QR Code on the packet resolving to a smartphone app download. The app measures and records the rhythm, sound and duration of sexual activity when the smartphone is placed on a bed or somewhere else, like tucked in your sock for example.

The data is uploaded to the campaign site anonymously with additional information selected by the user such as hair color, favorite music, pets etc. Users could then compare their data in the form of a graph with the average for their group. At the same time Esther were placing posters around Stockholm with amusing statistics obtained from the accumulated data, such as ‘dog owners are louder than cat owners’ and ‘glamorous blondes have an average duration of six minutes’.

Results exceeded expectations with 39% of young Stockholmers saying they were more likely to use a condom than before the campaign.

Starting tomorrow for five days 34/35 Dean Street, just off London’s Oxford Street, will be home to eBay’s UK version of the pop-up store. There are no tills in eBay’s Christmas Boutique (image below) but with over 350 items on display shoppers simply scan an associated QR Code that resolves to the item’s page on eBay and then complete their purchase in the normal way. In addition to Christmas best sellers there are donated charity items and clothing from the Fashion Outlet.

At the preview yesterday I saw two kinds of QR Code encoding, long urls that resolve to the specific item and bitly urls that resolve to generic search pages. I suspect that this is because someone discovered that generic search page urls with 140+ characters are just too dense to put on sales tickets. It is a pity that this wasn’t thought through and all eBay’s QR Codes encoded with bitly or even better an eBay branded url shortner. It’s a technical point and in no way detracts from what is a pioneering experiment in Internet shopping in a physical store in the heart of London. If you are in range take a look!

Imagine you are a farmer living in rural France. You want to sell your produce direct to the public but because you are in an area of outstanding natural beauty advertising signs and poster boards are forbidden. Also you have a very limited budget for marketing, so what can you do? To Gildas Le Béhoc and a technology minded friend the answer was obvious - put QR Codes on the cows! (Video below) As if that wasn’t enough, to ensure the story became truly viral they added to this bizarre combination of cows and QR Codes a conventional game. The QR Codes resolve to a scratch game with nine boxes and if you reveal three cows you win some free dairy products from the farm.
